| XVI - Pirates and Corsarians | XVIII - The Civil War |
King Carlos II passes the crown of Spain to Philippe, Duque de Anjou. But in 1706 the Archduke of Austria sends in an Anglo-Dutch fleet to submit the island. The local government and the university agree.
But King Philippe wins several battles on the peninsula and a civil war starts. On the left the authorities are watching the smugglers from the previous painting and soldiers rest. Others can be seen in the camps on the hillside.
The Bishop Abad y Lasierra is seen in the centre, bringing reforms to the islands, encouraging peasants to plant fruit and nut trees. He also promotes the construction of the seven churches listed below.
Some fishermen discuss on a beach while two peasants collect seaweed for insulation in roofing. Carob harvesting: used as winter fodder for sheep, goats, horses and cattle. The Greeks used their seeds as a one gram measure for gold (carob-karat).
Below: Fishing gear. The churches from left to right: Santa Ines, San Mateo, San Agustin, San Rafael, San Lorenzo, Santa Gertrudis and San Carlos.
